Starfield may be Bethesda’s least successful recent game

Bethesda fans have been watching Starfield’s playercount and it looks like the numbers are declining at a faster rate than expected.

When Starfield was announced, the gaming community was hype for an open world sci-fi adventure with unlimited exploration opportunities and a massive story to uncover. But when the game dropped, the reviews were mixed. Some felt disappointed with the semi-limited gameplay and flat characters while others said it was simply a game for Bethesda fans.

It looks like it may not be living up to the hype overall, however.

Bethesda fans worried about Starfield playercount

Starfield had a massive launch but its player count is getting pretty low, according to Steam DB. Right now, Starfield has an average 30,000 concurrent players per day on Steam, putting it at 41th most-played at the time of publication.

When Starfield came out, however, it peaked at just under 331K concurrent players on Steam and over 1 million on all platforms. These numbers aren’t bad, of course, but Bethesda fans are seeing a concerning pattern.

Basically, Starfield’s player count is dwindling faster than previous Bethesda games, including Skyrim and Fallout 4.

Fans feel that Starfield lacks the playability that previous Bethesda games had. There aren’t as many diverging paths so the player count has lowered now that many have finished the game and don’t want to play again. Meanwhile, people replayed Fallout and Skyrim multiple times — and are still replaying them to this day.

Another reason may be other big games that have launched this year, including Spider-Man 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3. There might just be too many games to play at once.

Bethesda fans are hopeful, however, that when DLS and updates drop the game will pick up again.
