Tommy Robinson and Katie Hopkins reinstated to X

Tommy Robinson and Katie Hopkins have been reinstated on X.

The two controversial figures were banned from the microblogging site - formerly known as Twitter - for sharing hateful content but have now been given their posting privileges back by the site’s new owner, Elon Musk.

Katie was removed back in 2018, while Tommy was axed two years later and is among a string of other prohibited posters - like former US President Donald Trump, 77, Andrew Tate, 36, and Kanye West, 46 - allowed back on the site by the 52-year-old billionaire when he took over the site for $44 billion after he branded himself a “free speech absolutist” and brought in a “general amnesty”.

The move has been condemned by campaigners after the research from BBC Monitoring found 190 of the 1,100 accounts allowed back was responsible for sharing hate and violence.

Nick Lowes, the CEO of Hope Not Hate, told BBC News: "Reinstating Tommy Robinson and Katie Hopkins means Elon Musk is allowing hateful content and misinformation to take place on his watch on X/Twitter.”

The group added that they would be writing to X to "make it clear the danger that their content poses".

Katie caused condemnation for tweeting about the need to find a “final solution” following the 2017 Manchester arena terrorist attack at the Ariana Grande concert. She later amended it to “true solution” after a mass outcry.

When her account was revived, Katie wrote: "Thank you @elonmusk. And thank you to all the Twitter family who have brought Tommy I back to @X.

"Know this. You are not alone. We are many. And we are stronger together. The fight back for your freedom is on."

Tommy - whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, and he founded the English Defence League before stepping down in 2013 - used to fight against “radical Islam” and was ordered to pay £100,000 in libel damages in 2021 to a Syrian schoolboy.

In November 2013, he pleaded guilty to fraud and was jailed for 18 months.
