URGENT: Biden, Xi to meet Wed. in U.S., new "framework" eyed for complex ties

U.S. President Joe Biden will hold face-to-face talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, in an attempt to create a "framework" to better manage the bilateral relationship despite various disagreements, senior officials said Friday.

The sit-down will take place on the sidelines of an annual summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in San Francisco, with everything from Taiwan and the South China Sea to semiconductor trade and human rights expected to be on the agenda.

"Much of what we're seeking to do is to create a framework for a successful management of the difficult...complicated (and) complex relationship," said one of the senior Biden administration officials before the schedule was formally disclosed. "I think you will see evidence of that next week."
