Sumiyoshi Taisha is the head office of approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide. In its hometown of Osaka, it is called "Sumiyossan" and has been loved by many people for a long time. Two million worshipers visit the shrine every year on the third day of the New Year to pray for happiness for the coming year.

National treasure Sumiyoshi-zukuri main hall

The main shrine is built in Sumiyoshi style, which is said to be one of the oldest styles in the history of shrine architecture. There are four main shrines designated as national treasures, from the first main shrine to the fourth main shrine. The first to third main shrines are in series, the fourth and third main shrines are parallel, and all the main shrines face west, which is a very unusual architectural arrangement.

Characteristics of Sumiyoshi-zukuri are the cypress bark roof, vermilion-painted pillars, and white gofun-lacquered board walls made from baked seashells, all of which are characteristic of Sumiyoshi-style architecture. You can see ancient Japanese architectural techniques up close.

Sorihashi is a popular spot within Sumiyoshi Taisha. When the vermillion railings reflect on the water surface, it looks like a circle, making it look like a drum, which is why it is also called ``Taiko Bridge.'' When you visit, be sure to check out the view from the side.

First, enter the precincts from the large building. What you will see in front of you is the Sori Bridge, which is believed to bring you exorcism just by crossing it.
