London Stock Exchange struck by double outage, small cap trading paralysed

By Lars Mucklejohn

The London Stock Exchange has resolved two outages that disrupted trading in some 2,000 smaller stocks for several hours on Tuesday – the third incident of its kind since October.

Analysts have warned that these incidents could strike a blow to the bourse’s credibility, with two previous outages in October and November.

The precise cause or full impact of today’s outages remain unclear.

The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) said at 11.23am that it was “undertaking immediate analysis” over an issue that meant only FTSE 100, FTSE 250 and IOB securities were available for trading.

It had resolved the outage by the afternoon, with regular trading in affected stocks resuming just before 12.45pm.

The small cap stocks initially stopped trading shortly after 9.15am.

The LSEG started to resume auctions on the shares at around 9.55am, and they were back in regular trading by around 10.15am.

Trading on hundreds of smaller shares was disrupted for some 80 minutes in October, while the FTSE Russell indexes suffered a 40-minute outage in November.

City A.M. has approached the LSEG for comment.
