China's Xi, Russian PM agree to expand economic cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin agreed to further expand bilateral economic cooperation as they met in Beijing on Wednesday, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Noting that China and Russia have achieved the goal of raising annual bilateral trade volume to $200 billion, Xi showed his willingness to further promote their "high-level political relations" and jointly advance the process of boosting economic and social development, the ministry said.

China, which has been strengthening economic ties with Russia, opposes Western sanctions imposed after the Ukraine invasion. Increased bilateral trade has drawn concern over Beijing's help for Moscow to circumvent the punitive measures.

In their meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Xi said Beijing's firm commitment to "high-level opening-up" will provide new opportunities for the development of countries including Russia, the ministry said.

Mishustin told the Chinese leader that Russia is willing to work with China to further boost cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and energy, the ministry added.

The Russian prime minister, who is now on a two-day visit to Beijing following his previous trip to China in May this year, agreed with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Tuesday to enhance bilateral economic ties and boost energy cooperation, according to the Chinese ministry.
