A Russian reconnaissance aircraft flying without a detection signal was spotted over the Baltic Sea off Germany, prompting fighter jets to be scrambled.

An emergency patrol was sent up from the Laage Air Base in north-eastern Germany, the Luftwaffe said on Tuesday.

The Russian military aircraft was "identified in international airspace off Rügen and briefly escorted before turning eastwards again," the German Air Force said in a statement on the X platform, formerly Twitter.

An almost identical incident occurred in April 2023.

The emergency patrol usually consists of two Eurofighters, which take off as soon as possible to check for possible threats or to avert them if necessary.
