Barbie Movie's Goal Was Culture Shift, Says Margot Robbie

Barbie sensation and Hollywood darling, Margot Robbie, has at last broken her silence on the glaring absence of an Oscar nomination for her standout performance in the 2023 blockbuster hit. The film, which raked in a staggering $1.38 billion worldwide, left audiences enamored with Robbie’s portrayal. Yet, despite the film’s sweeping success, Robbie’s stellar performance was notably overlooked by the Academy.

During a poignant exchange at a SAG-AFTRA discussion, Robbie candidly remarked, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.” Reflecting on the purpose behind the film, she said that the aim was to “shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact,” Robbie said. “And it’s already done that, and some way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

Despite earning an impressive eight Oscar nominations, encompassing categories like Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, the absence of a Best Director nomination did not escape Robbie’s attention. Addressing the matter, she remarked, “Obviously, I think Greta [Gerwig] should be nominated as a director,” she said. “What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”

“Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the best picture nod,” Robbie added.

Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, who received the nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Actress from the film, expressed their disappointment that the two women were not nominated.

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” Gosling said last week, adding that “there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.”
