'It's true': Fabrizio Romano says Mikel Arteta actually rejected bids for £20m Arsenal star in January

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Arsenal turned down offers to let Takehiro Tomiyasu leave the club in the winter window.

The Gunners, like many other clubs, were very quiet in January. Mikel Arteta signed nobody in the entire window, but Romano has now revealed that there were offers for one of Arsenal‘s key players – Tomiyasu.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal rejected bids for Takehiro Tomiyasu

Arsenal signed Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna back in the summer of 2021 for just under £20 million (Sky Sports).

The Japan international has had a terrible time due to injuries, but whenever he has been fit, he has shown his class in multiple positions.

Mikel Arteta rates Tomiyasu very highly. He views the defender as an option in all four defensive positions, and that makes him a very important member of the squad.

Clubs abroad, however, tried their luck to sign Tomiyasu last month, but Arteta and Arsenal made it clear to all of them that their Japanese defender was going nowhere.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who said on GiveMeSport: “It is true that Arsenal had some possibilities to sell Tomiyasu during the winter transfer window.

“They had some loan proposals, from what I heard, from Italy. But, at the end of the day, it was never something concrete because the board and Arteta always wanted to keep Tomiyasu, and he is very happy at the club.”

Takehiro Tomiyasu is a very important player for Arsenal

Selling Takehiro Tomiyasu was never an option for Arsenal.

The Japan international’s injury issues are a concern, but when he’s fit, he offers so much to Arsenal – both at right-back and more importantly on the opposite side.

Tomiyasu is really important for Arsenal against the bigger sides. He is so much better than Oleksandr Zinchenko when it comes to defending, and Mikel Arteta has often used him at left-back as a result.

That is why Tomiyasu is such an important player for Arsenal, and if reports are to be believed, he’s on the verge of signing a new contract now as well.

That is great news for all parties.
