Rivian has not been sitting idly since the launch of the R1T back in 2022. The company is set to unveil its next product line, dubbed the R2, with what looks like the first vehicle of the series set to be a more affordable SUV. On top of that, the company has been working on building a new production plant in Georgia. But that’s not all, as photos have recently emerged showcasing a set of mystery Rivians testing in -25° F weather near Fairbanks, Alaska. This suggests that a potential R1T and R1S refresh is in the works.
Rivian R1T and R1S Refresh: Speculation
Images shared by RivianTrackr via X (formally Twitter), the camouflaged prototypes appear to be the R1T pickups. However, thanks to the use of camouflage, it’s possible that the vehicles will be receiving a facelift. Since it wasn’t too long ago that the Rivian R1T and R1S started deliveries, it’s safe to assume that these test mules are part of an update to the electric vehicles set to arrive either for 2025 or 2026, just in time as the electric truck segment is about to heat up with the arrival of the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and Ram 1500 REV.
If a facelift for the vehicles is in the works, we can expect sharper exterior styling and perhaps some changes to the interior. However, the photos posted don’t offer any indication of that. More spy photos must be obtained, or we’ll have to wait for the refresh announcement. Rivian could be testing a new electric powertrain for the R1T and R1S. With the quad-motor setup, the R1T produces an impressive 835 horsepower, but that high power level isn’t available with the Max Pack option, so that may change.
Only time will tell what Rivian is up to with these camouflaged test mules. In the meantime, we can anticipate the Rivan R2S unveiling, which is set to take place on March 7, less than a month away. This offering is expected to be a significantly cheaper alternative to the R1 vehicles. It will be a crucial step for the company, making the Rivian a viable EV option for millions.
