'In the mix': Liverpool are battling Man City to sign one of the fastest players in the world - journalist

Liverpool are one of the teams jostling to be involved in the race to sign Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies this summer.

Davies is currently having a contract stand-off with Bayern. The 23-year-old’s present deal expires in 2025 which has led to speculation over his future.

And speaking exclusively to RTK, journalist Graeme Bailey has reported that Liverpool are ‘in the mix’ to bring Davies to Anfield.

However, the expectation remains that the Canadian is on his way to Real Madrid.

“They [Liverpool] are in the mix for him [Davies] along with City,” Bailey says. “But they both feel he’s Real Madrid bound, that’s the understanding and it does seem that way.

“It does look and appear that he’s very much Real Madrid bound and there is a reason he hasn’t signed his new deal at Bayern Munich. I think Bayern believe that he’s on his way to Real as well.”

Liverpool set to lose Davies battle

If Davies ends up at Madrid, it seems likely that the Spanish giants will have a whole new left side next season. Davies and Kylian Mbappe, that will take some stopping.

Mbappe’s qualities are obviously numerous and don’t need regaling. But one of the Frenchman’s most celebrated attributes is his speed. Mbappe is lightning quick.

Well, so too is Davies. As per bundesliga.com, the former Vancouver Whitecaps youngster is the fourth fastest player in the German top division’s history. He’s lightning.

With Liverpool also heavily linked with Mbappe, perhaps there’s still an off chance that this road-running left side could yet be spotted in red next season.

Certainly, it would appear that something would have to go very wrong in Madrid for that to be the case. But the Reds are keeping their noses in for a reason, especially with Davies. Things are never done until they’re done in the world of football transfers.

One question that is immediately thrown up is whether Liverpool truly need Davies at all.

Andy Robertson has had his injury struggles this season, but it was a freak shoulder issue rather than anything muscular that kept him out. That wouldn’t point to a long-term problem for the Scot. Still only 29, it isn’t time to replace him yet – despite some suggestions otherwise.

If Davies were to arrive, he’d surely be doing so with a view to taking the starting spot. Remarkably just 23, it feels like the Canada international has been around for ages. But he’s still got his whole career in-front of him.

There’s little question that Davies would be an exciting addition for Liverpool, it’s good that they’re in the running. But this one still sounds like a long shot.
