An artist inspired by the meaning of dreams and the unconscious mind is now showing off her work.
Grantham-based artist, Szilvia Ponyiczki, is exhibiting her art at the Spotlight Gallery in Newark Town Hall until March 9.
The Time Immemorial exhibition features modernistic and surrealist paintings and sculptures, taking influence from Jungian Psychology, which analyses the balance between the conscious and unconscious.
“I’ve always been inspired by the mind,” said Szilvia.
“But I really like the idea of the collective unconscious, which is basically knowledge that we all have without realising it.
“I researched different art from ancient cultures from all over the world and they all had very similar ideas and symbols despite not having any other connection.
“A lot of people are really interested in what our dreams mean because they can’t always be explained.
“My art is similar. I don’t really have a plan when I start a painting, but it is made up of layers, just like the layers of the mind.
“This is just my interpretation and anyone that’s interested can come along and learn a little more about the theory.”
Having worked as an architect for more than 15 years, Hungarian-born Szilvia moved to the UK and put her career on pause when she had children.
After this she decided to lean in to her passion for art by taking on a masters degree at Nottingham Trent University.
She said: “I always believed that art is a big part of architecture, designing buildings is an artistic process.
“When I was starting it was before computers were widely used and we had to learn how to draw and I enjoy that side of it.
“Because I loved art so much I decided to go for it and go to university and ever since I’ve been working as an artist, doing freelance projects.”
Visitors have the chance to meet Szilvia and talk about her work on February 21, at 11am and 2pm.
