German women delight in 'historic' Olympic women's basketball berth

The German women's basketball team was ecstatic after qualifying for this year's Paris Olympics in what will be a maiden appearance at the Games.

Germany clinched their place in the 12-team Olympic tournament with a 73-71 victory over hosts Brazil on Sunday night at a qualifying tournament in Belem.

"I've never seen the will and passion we showed today like this before. It's a historic night that this team deserves," coach Lisa Thomaidis said.

"We've developed steadily over the last eight months and worked on ourselves. The Olympics will be an important experience for all of us."

Just reaching the qualifying tournament was already rated a success for the German team, and they then surprised in Belem with victories against Serbia and Brazil, while losing against three-time Olympic silver medallists Australia.

"I'm simply speechless. We overcame so many hurdles before and during the tournament and never got discouraged. For us, this is simply a dream that is becoming a reality. I'm incredibly proud," point guard Svenja Brunckhorst said.

Germany are the only debutants for the Olympic tournament which starts on July 27 in Lille with the preliminary round before moving to Paris for the deciding stages.

The German men have also qualified for Paris, by virtue of a first ever World Cup title last year.
