Flood forces school closures, evacuations in Turkish tourism hotspot

Flash floods in Turkey`s Mediterranean tourism centre of Antalya forced schools to close on Tuesday as hours of heavy morning rains resulted in waterlogged streets.

Flood-swept cars, water-flooded shops and roads in the densely-populated city centre were shown on the state broadcaster TRT.

Teams rescued more than 900 people stranded in cars, while evacuations are separately underway in some households, Antalya Mayor Muhittin Böcek told reporters.

Residents should not leave their homes unless they must, Böcek warned, citing “unprecedented” heavy rain in the city.

A hospital laboratory was also slightly damaged, Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin said on Tuesday.

Relief is nowhere in site, as heavy rain is expected for the next two days, the weather authority said, warning locals to beware of the coming storm.
