Flash floods kill one in Turkey's Antalya

One person died on Tuesday in Turkey's southern Antalya province after flash floods struck the city centre.

A person was found dead stranded in a car in central Kepez district, Deputy Interior Minister Münir Karaloğlu told reporters in Antalya. The car was stuck in water in an underpass, according to state news agency Anadolu.

As many as 989 people had been evacuated so far, Karaloğlu said.

The Kepez district received rainfall equal to the three-month average in just 12 hours, he added.

Heavy rain is also expected for the next two days in the Mediterranean tourism hotspot of Antalya where over 2,000 crew were dispatched from surrounding cities to join the relief efforts, Karaloğlu said.

Hours of heavy morning rains forced schools to close in the densely-populated centre of Antalya as water flooded streets, shops and roads, state broadcaster TRT footage showed.
