22-year-old Tottenham player says he has a 'nice weapon' he can unleash on the pitch

Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has spoken about his speed, deeming it a “nice weapon to have”.

The Spurs ace, speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, discussed the speed he clocked up in the game against Brentford at the end of January

As reported by the Tottenham website, Van de Ven clocked a top speed of 37.38 km/h (23.22mph).

This is the highest speed by a player on record in England’s top flight since records began in 2020.

For context, Usain Bolt ran his world-record breaking 100m sprint at the 2008 Olympic Games at an average of 23.35mph.

However, Van de Ven isn’t particularly concerned. The Tottenham defender believes that his speed is just a nice tool to have.

“I knew I was fast. At Wolfsburg, my previous club, I also set a nice pace,” he said.

“It’s certainly a nice statistic. It immediately went viral. I expect that the equipment in the Premier League will be good.

“If you see how good the technology is, I assume that it is reasonably correct. Whether it is completely accurate, you dare, I don’t have to say.

“It’s just a nice weapon to have, but I’m not concerned with it at all.”

Micky van de Ven a superb acquisition for Tottenham

Although the number itself isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things, there’s no doubt that Van de Ven is absolutely rapid, and it has a major impact on games.

Should anyone get through the Tottenham defence, the 22-year-old can apply the afterburners and his chances of catching up and thwarting his opponents is high.

Considering how high standards have risen in the Premier League in recent years, in pretty much every category, it’s important for players to boast as many top traits in their respective repertoires.

It’s no surprise that Tottenham’s results are picking up now that the team is stronger. Let’s hope for a strong finish to the season, and then the summer could see yet more great additions.
