Travis Kelce 'heartbroken' after mass shooting following Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl triumph

Travis Kelce has said he's 'heartbroken' after a mass shooting following the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl triumph on Sunday night.

The Chiefs retained NFL's biggest trophy with a 25-22 victory in Las Vegas, with Kelce securing the prize for the third time in his career.

On Wednesday, however, tragedy struck.

As supporters celebrated the Chiefs' win, a gunman opened fire \- injuring 21 and killing a woman.

And Kelce has now taken to social media to reveal he's been left 'heartbroken' by the incident.

“I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today," he said on X.

“My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me.”

There were more than 800 police officers near the City's busy Union Station.

The Chiefs were on team buses and returning to Arrowhead Stadium when the gunman opened fire.

Three people were detained, with police chief Stacey Graves revealing firearms were recovered as well.

She also said: “I'm angry at what happened today. The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment."

Graves also says police are still piecing together what happened while refusing to provide details about a possible motive.

President Joe Biden has also spoken out on the tragedy and urged America to unite in the face of adversity.

"I ask the country to stand with me," Mr Biden said in a statement.

"To make your voice heard in Congress so we finally act to ban assault weapons, to limit high-capacity magazines, strengthen background checks, keep guns out of the hands of those who have no business owning them or handling them."

It is not the first time a sports celebration in the US has been marred by gun violence.

Several people were left injured in Denver last year after the Denver Nuggets won the NBA Championship.

And there was gunfire last year at a parking lot near the Texas Rangers' World Series championship parade, too.

Eyewitnesses told NBC News that fans celebrating the Chiefs' Super Bowl win were sent scrambling for cover.
