Fans thank Disney for 'original' and 'exciting' Nigeria representation in new series

The Walt Disney Company celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023, and in 2024 it’s commencing a new century with a wide range of exciting projects, including Moana 2. Lovers of all things animated will know that Walt Disney Animation Studios has consistently delivered, but with their latest project Iwájú they’re getting more and more creative, collaborating with an outside studio for the first time to bring a vibrant new series to Disney+.

Iwájú trailer teases historic Disney series

The Iwájú trailer teases a brand-new limited series from Disney Animation and the Pan-African entertainment company Kugali Media.

This marks their first collaboration and an exciting first step for Disney.

The original series takes place in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, bringing us the story of two best friends Tola (voiced by Simisola Gbadamosi) and Kole. Tola is a young girl living on a wealthy island with all the resources in the world, but one day Kole invites her on an adventure to see the “real” Lagos.

Her family desperately attempts to find her and bring her home, but a string of threats pop up in both worlds that must be overcome.

“As a person from Africa, I love that Disney is making an animation about Nigerian people,” one fan commented appreciatively on the trailer. “It’s nice. Thank you, Disney.”

Similarly, another reacted: “As a Nigerian, this is by far the most impressive looking Nigerian animated story I’ve seen so far… I’m really excited. The characters talk and act exactly the way we do…”

More comments are coming in, with one praising that they “love how original, adventurous, and fun this looks. Futuristic Nigeria is such a cool concept.”

“As a Nigerian myself, I am thankful that countries like South Africa and Nigeria are getting the recognition it deserves,” another beamed.

Iwájú Disney+ release date

Iwájú is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Wednesday, February 28th 2024.

All episodes will premiere on the same day so that subscribers can binge it in its entirety if they wish, rather than the dreaded alternative of waiting an entire week for new installments.

As it’s already been billed as a limited series, no season 2 has been announced. After that promising trailer, I’m pretty excited to see how this one shapes up—it looks like tons of fun.
