White House Troubled Over Russian Anti-Satellite Weapon Development

The White House confirmed it is closely monitoring a new Russian anti-satellite weapon under development, emphasizing that while concerning, it does not pose an immediate threat.

National security spokesperson John Kirby stated that the new security threat, though troubling, is not yet deployed and does not directly endanger human safety or cause physical destruction on Earth.

Kirby, while limited in disclosing specifics, affirmed that the threat pertains to Russia’s pursuit of an anti-satellite capability. He stressed that the weapon in development would potentially violate the Outer Space Treaty, an international agreement signed by over 130 countries.

“We’ve been closely monitoring this Russian activity and we will continue to take it very seriously,” said Kirby.

The clarification followed Chairman Turner’s letter to House members and his subsequent social media post about a national security threat, prompting numerous inquiries.

“I can assure you that we will continue to keep members of Congress as well as our international partners and all of you and the American people as fully informed as possible,” promised Kirby.
