'Doesn't know anything': Pundit criticises Tottenham loanee after 'nightmare' mistake in loss on Saturday

Frank Leboeuf has criticised Tottenham Hotspur loanee Sergio Reguilon after Brentford were thrashed by Liverpool on Saturday.

Thomas Frank’s side suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Premier League leaders, with the opening goal coming from a mistake from Sergio Reguilon in the first-half.

Virgil van Dijk made a clearance which seemed to catch the Bees off-guard as Reguilon and Diogo Jota ran towards the halfway line. The next outfield player closest to the Brentford goal was Darwin Nunez, so it was imperative that the Spurs loanee won the ball.

However, Reguilon got it all wrong. The Spaniard seemingly wanted to try and volley the ball away. But that allowed Jota the time to get his head on the pass. And that header set Nunez on his way to run through and chip a sumptuous effort over Mark Flekken.

And speaking to ESPN, Frank Leboeuf suggested that Reguilon should have done so much better with van Dijk’s ball over the top.

“I never felt they were in danger, they were strong defensively, they knew how to play. As the guys said, they had so many gifts from Brentford,” he said.

“The first goal, you have to see how Reguilon tries to defend. He doesn’t even try to go for the header with Jota. Jota does very well, he’s very clever, he knows exactly what he has to do. But Reguilon doesn’t know anything about what he has to do. He tries to kick the ball with his left foot where the ball is in the air. So it’s a nightmare.”

Tottenham will hope he finds some form ahead of the summer

It does appear that the left-back is done at Tottenham while Ange Postecoglou remains at the helm. Reports this week suggested that Spurs hope that Reguilon can build his value up ahead of a potential permanent sale in the summer.

So mistakes like the one on Saturday will have done Tottenham no favours at all.

Reguilon is definitely a decent full-back. But his strength seems to lie with the work he does going forward. He was much better for the Bees when he was trying to make things happen further up the pitch.

What they did not need against the Premier League leaders was for one of their defenders to make it quite so easy for the Reds to take the lead.
