0% tackles won... Man Utd loanee has nightmare debut as his high-flying side suffer shock 4-0 drubbing

Manchester United loanee Rhys Bennett did not have the best of times on his Stockport County debut.

Stockport manager Dave Challinor recruited the centre-half in the January transfer window, as his top-of-the-table side looked for a strong finish to the season with either a league title or promotion.

Bennett, 20, was desperate for some first-team game time away from Old Trafford, so Stockport looked like the perfect fit for the youngster on his first loan spell away from the academy.

But all didn’t go according to plan as he made his debut on Saturday.

Rhys Bennett shock debut for Stockport County

Bennett and his new County teammates made the trip to Tranmere on Saturday, where they faced a severely struggling side. Tranmere Rovers sat 20th in the League 2 table and were without a win in four matches.

Stockport, on the other hand, were still league leaders. They’ve had some bumps in the road of late, including a depleting 3-1 home loss to Crewe Alexandra the week prior, but remained firm favourites heading into this one.

Surely they couldn’t lose two on the bounce? Well, they did – and in some fashion. Tranmere picked apart Bennett’s side 4-0, dominating proceedings throughout.

Bennett didn’t exactly paint himself in glory either on his full debut. He was part of a defence that shipped four goals, but he can’t be singled out – it was a shocking team performance.

Early days for Rhys Bennett

Talk about a baptism of fire for first-team football, he won’t receive many shock batterings like that in his career.

Bennett will simply just have to take this one on the chin. Realistically, it was not his fault for his new side, it appeared that everyone had a shocker.

With two defeats on the bounce, Stockport will now be sweating slightly. They now sit just one point clear at the top of League Two, with Mansfield Town breathing closely down their neck.

Let’s hope Bennett’s and County’s fortunes change as they face an away trip to Gillingham on Tuesday.
