27-year-old wanted by Steve Cooper at Nottingham Forest sent off for horror tackle on Sunday

Steve Cooper was keen to sign Mason Holgate during his time at Nottingham Forest and today he was sent off in horrific circumstances.

The Sheffield United defender left his team facing an uphill battle after he was dismissed in the opening 10 minutes.

Initially, referee Stuart Attwell gave the Forest-linked player a yellow card but after a VAR check, it was upgraded.

Mason Holgate sent off after horror challenge

Well, this one certainly wasn’t for the faint-hearted! His knee-high challenge could have seriously injured Kaoru Mitoma but thankfully he was able to continue.

Holgate looked baffled at being shown the red card but he won’t want to watch this one back any time soon.

Forest were linked with Holgate in January 2023 as Cooper tried to bolster his defensive ranks in the fight against survival.

Ultimately, Forest opted for other options, with Holgate struggling to play regular football with Everton during 2022/23.

For the first half of the current campaign, Holgate was on loan at Southampton but he was recalled and sent to Sheffield United instead.

Now, his hopes of game time have taken a significant hit with Holgate now set for a three-match suspension.

Forest got lucky escape with Holgate

Holgate is 27-years-old now and no way should any team keen to progress in the Premier League be looking to sign him.

The versatile defender can play anywhere across the back four but that’s about all he has to offer.

Cooper was keen to sign the player for Forest but for whatever reason the club decided against it.

Today’s act showcases that he has it in the locker to step way over the line and ill-discipline isn’t something that Forest need in their situation.

With that in mind, perhaps Forest got themselves a lucky escape when they opted not to sign Holgate.
