What is Napoleon about?

Directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner), Napoleon tells the story of one of the greatest military leaders in history.

The movie charts Napoleon Bonaparte’s (Joaquin Phoenix) meteoric rise through the ranks of the French army thanks to his strategic leadership, particularly at the battles of Toulon, 13 Vendémiaire and the Pyramids, which would eventually see him crowned as the Emperor of France.

Napoleon’s ruthless climb to power takes place alongside his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) who proves as equally formidable as the great military leader himself.

Apple TV+ confirms Napoleon streaming release date

After Napoleon’s initial release in late 2023, Apple TV+ has finally confirmed that the movie will be arriving on the streaming service on Friday, March 1, 2024.

The movie’s streaming release date comes exactly 100 days after Napoleon first hit theaters back on November 22.

Napoleon’s 100-day gap between theatrical and streaming release is 16 days longer than that of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Apple TV+’s other big film release of 2023, which arrived on the streaming service on January 12 after initially hitting theaters on October 20.

Napoleon’s box office performance

Against a budget reportedly in the region of $130-$200 million, Napoleon earned $220 million at the box office during its theatrical release window.

According to Deadline, this means Napoleon has reportedly lost $165 million when marketing costs are factored alongside its budget.

While streaming revenue is tricky to calculate for a specific movie, Apple will undoubtedly be hoping that the movie’s performance on Apple TV+ can help make up that shortfall.

The movie’s underwhelming box office performance was the result of a combination of factors, ranging from mixed reviews – Napoleon earned 58% on Rotten Tomatoes – as well as criticisms of purported historical inaccuracies dotted throughout the film.

However, a big factor in Napoleon’s underperformance is almost certainly the fact that it was announced that the movie would be coming to streaming at a later date, which prompted viewers to wait to watch the 2 hours and 37 minutes-long movie at home.

Napoleon will be available to stream on Apple TV+ from Friday, March 1, 2024.
