Donald Trump's weekend visit to Sneaker Con in Philadelphia, where he promoted a Trump-branded line of athletic shoes, was greeted with a great of deal of skepticism on CNN Monday morning.
The surprising visit by the former president — who was showered with boos which he called "a lot of emotion in this room" — was labeled by CNN commentator Jamal Simmons as a "con."
Speaking with hosts Audie Cornish and John Berman, Simmons suggested Trump was hoping to appeal to the crowd of younger male voters whom he has not been able to reach.

"My thesis on this, hear me out, is that this is a kind of place where you go to maybe a nod to the Trump-curious young male voter which may be a problem for [President Joe] Biden," Cornish prompted her guest before adding, "Black and Brown, specifically. It was crazy for him to be there, but also, I was like, well, maybe not so crazy."

'Yeah, you got a, there's a guy on Instagram who implies as a rapper who goes after the sneakers pretty hard over the weekend," Simmons began. "I remember I interviewed Wale, the artists few years ago for digital show that I did and he just summed it up perfectly. He's like 'It's a finesse.' The whole Trump thing, it's a con, right?"
"And so the people who are actually familiar with the world know that the entire Trump enterprise is a con," he elaborated. "And now we're seeing it on stage where he's trying to hawk sneakers, right? He's supposed to be trying to figure out how do we solve the war in Ukraine and what do we do about homelessness and even the border which is on his politics, right? Instead, he's hawking sneakers!"
