‘Very sloppy’ – Man Utd legend baffled by performances of three players vs Luton Town, he doesn't hold back

Peter Schmeichel ruthlessly slammed the performances of three Manchester United players during the Premier League clash against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Sunday.

Manchester United walked away with all three Premier League points thanks to Rasmus Hojlund, who scored a superb brace inside 10 minutes against Luton Town.

The Red Devils have won four of their last five Premier League matches, with United building momentum in their challenge for a top-four finish this season.

Erik ten Hag’s men have been undefeated since the start of 2024 and have won six matches across all competitions since January.

Despite their latest win against Luton Town, United’s resilience at Kenilworth Road was tested after Carlton Morris pulled one back for his side in the 14th minute.

The Red Devils started off strong during the opening stages of the contest, but Luton Town fought back and United were able to weather the storm.

However, Peter Schmeichel was far from impressed with what he saw from three United players before half-time in Sunday’s Premier League fixture.

Schmeichel critical of three Man Utd players

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Schmeichel insisted that Manchester United were “very sloppy” and was critical of midfielder Casemiro.

Casemiro was fortunate to escape a potential sending off and Erik ten Hag withdrew the former Real Madrid star and replaced him with Scott McTominay at half-time.

Harry Maguire, much like Casemiro, underwhelmed with his performance in the first half and Jonny Evans replaced the England defender for the second half.

Schmeichel also felt that United forward Marcus Rashford added very little to his side’s attacking offence against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

“They have gone very, very sloppy,” he said during his half-time analysis.

“Casemiro has got a yellow card and he should have maybe got the second.

“Ten Hag has got a very, very big decision to make – I don’t think he will play Casemiro in the second half. I don’t think he can.

“That’s the thing with sloppiness, Harry Maguire has been asking for a yellow card and he was successful in that one.

“He has been pushing up quite a lot into the other half, pushing players and grappling from behind. Things you don’t do.

“It’s little things that come down to the lack of concentration.”

Schmeichel added: “You have seen Rashford doing stuff, then stopping and doing nothing.”

Ten Hag on withdrawing Casemiro and Maguire

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag insisted that he made the tactical decision to withdraw Casemiro and Maguire to avoid either United player from being sent off.

“I think the game was going in that direction, there was a lot of pressure on the referee,” he said at his post-match press conference.

“They were both at risk of another booking, we have good replacements with Jonny Evans and Scott McTominay, so that’s why we took them off.

“We didn’t want to go with that risk.”
