Report: £120k-a-week Chelsea player is training with the under-21s after three failed moves

Chelsea defender Malang Sarr is still training with the under-21s at Cobham.

Malang Sarr was sent to train with them during pre-season and has done so ever since, according to The Athletic.

The same outlet has also claimed that his representatives looked into moves to Besiktas, AEK Athens and the Saudi Arabia Pro League last summer but no agreement was found.

It has left Sarr stranded at Chelsea while being on a big contract.

As per Spotrac, the central defender earns £120,000 a week at Stamford Bridge. He came close to joining Le Havre last month but a move collapsed at the last minute. Club president Mathieu Bodmer described the whole situation as “disgraceful”.

Malang Sarr training with Chelsea’s under-21s

There is no way back for Sarr at Chelsea. There is no room for him in their senior squad; he is going to have to see out the season with the under-21s.

Mauricio Pochettino has Axel Disasi, Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah for the centre-back position.

The Argentine also has Wesley Fofana, though the former Leicester City man is still out with an injury right now.

Sarr really needed to leave Chelsea in January or last summer, but there is nothing he can do now. In the next transfer window, the club and the Frenchman need to do everything they can to ensure a transfer actually happens this time.

No one will benefit from Sarr staying for another season. He is not going to get any minutes, while Chelsea are just going to be paying huge money to someone who is not in their plans.

Terminating his contract could be one route to go down. At the end of the day, though, they just need to facilitate an exit for Sarr, whose career is not going anywhere as he continues to train with the younger players at Cobham.
