Horror-mystery that's like a violent mix of Scream and Knives Out shoots to Netflix no.1

When looking for a movie to watch, sometimes you fall into the trap of scrolling endlessly through Netflix for what feels like a lifetime. One of the more helpful features the streamer has rolled out in recent years is the ‘Top 10’ categories that feature on the homepage. Divided into TV and movies, we’re shown which 10 titles are the most popular, covering a range of genres and offering an appealing mix. Currently, the ‘Top 10’ movies section is headlined by the 2023 slasher movie Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving movie streaming on Netflix

The 2023 horror movie Thanksgiving was added to Netflix this February and has quickly become the most popular movie currently streaming.

It stars Addison Rae, Patrick Dempsey, and was directed by horror maestro Eli Roth, who is best known for helming the first two Hostel movies. These films are renowned by genre fans and mainstream audiences alike for their ultra-gory content. On the other hand, he’s delivered more accessible thrillers like Knock Knock starring Keanu Reeves too.

With Thanksgiving, Eli delivers a Scream-esque chiller that begins with a tragedy taking place at a superstore on Black Friday. One year later, residents of the small Massachusetts town that were involved in the incident in different ways are violently picked off one by one at the hands of a masked killer.

We center on a circle of friends, but will any of them manage to unmask the killer and live to see next Thanksgiving?

It’s a holiday-themed slasher destined to be rewatched by many every November, and its 84% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes is a testament to the fact that you should. It was hands down one of my favorite movies of 2023 too. The whodunnit and comedy elements that audiences loved so much in Knives Out from 2019 are there, combined with genuinely grisly kills.

10 must-see slasher movies on Netflix

Thanksgiving is currently beating out the rom-com Players, the documentary Lover Stalker Killer, the brand-new thriller The Abyss, and the box office sensation The Super Mario Bros. Movie to be No. 1 in the ‘Top 10’ movies category.

However, there are a handful of other slashers streaming on the platform not on the section that I still wholeheartedly recommend you check out:

  • A Classic Horror Story
  • The Babysitter
  • The Conference
  • Creep
  • Fear Street Part Two: 1978
  • Killer Book Club
  • Nobody Sleeps In The Woods Tonight
  • The Rental
  • The Strangers
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Thanksgiving is now streaming on Netflix.
