Thousands of people took to the streets of Brtislava on Wednesday to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the murder of Slovak investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova.

Protesters also demonstrated against the government of left-wing nationalist Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Kuciak and Kusnirova were shot dead in their home in the village of Velka Maca in February 2018.

Kuciak had been reporting on corruption involving politicians and businessmen at the time of his death.

The murders sparked mass protests at the time and led to the resignation of Fico, who was also prime minister then.

Fico held the post of prime minister from 2006 to 2010 and 2012 to 2018. His left-wing nationalist SMER-SSD party won the September 30 parliamentary elections and has been in government since October.

The crowd chanted "Shame!" and "Fico to prison!" in front of the government office in Bratislava on Wednesday.

The memorial and protest rally were directed particularly against a criminal law reform planned by Fico's government.

The core of this is the abolition of a special prosecutor's office for organized crime and corruption. Opponents accuse the government of wanting to sweep under the carpet corruption cases from previous periods in which Fico's Smer-SSD party was in power.

The government, on the other hand, argues that the special prosecutor's office was misused by a different government for a political battle against Fico's party.

Mourning for the killed couple is also being exploited by Fico's opponents for party political purposes, the government says.
