Luis Suarez remarks on MLS debut with Inter Miami

By Braden Chalker

Luis Suarez suited up for the first time in MLS action for Inter Miami in their 2-0 triumph over Real Salt Lake to open up the 2024 season.

The legendary Liverpool figure logged 89 minutes on his Major League Soccer debut vs Salt Lake and despite not scoring in his first competitive game for the Herons, he managed to lay off an assist for Diego Gomez to seal the three points.

There were times when Suarez looked a little rusty as he's still becoming familiar with his new teammates, but there were also several moments when the 37-year-old linked up nicely with the likes of former Barcelona colleagues Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets.

"I'm so happy because it was the first game and winning at home is really important," Suarez said in postgame interview to MLS Season Pass. "We're still friends inside the pitch and outside the pitch. We try our best to help the team."

Suarez went on to reveal that while Miami was already enticing due to the prospect of playing with his old Barcelona teammates, the idea of helping a young team stack up their trophy cabinet is an obstacle he's eager to take on.

"There's no bigger ambition and desire than coming to a team that just won its first title last year [Leagues Cup] and trying to win MLS Cup," Suarez added. "It's a title the club hasn’t won yet. That’s the goal, that’s the challenge for me and the whole team."

The Herons return to action this Sunday to take on five-time MLS Cup winners LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park, with Gabriel Pec and Riqui Puig looking to make their mark against Gerardo 'Tata' Martino's side.
