Speaker Johnson And Leader Jeffries Unveil House AI Task Force

In a move aimed at addressing the transformative potential and complexities of artificial intelligence (AI), the House has established a bipartisan task force, announced Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries earlier this week.

“Because advancements in artificial intelligence have the potential to rapidly transform our economy and our society, it is important for Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to understand and plan for both the promises and the complexities of this transformative technology,” said Speaker Johnson.

Named the AI Task Force, it aims to bolster US leadership in AI innovation and enact measures to counter current and emerging threats. Johnson and Jeffries have appointed twelve members to the task force, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Representative Sara Jacobs, and Representative Rich McCormick. This bipartisan group is poised to scrutinize the influence of AI on financial services, housing, and business markets and operations.

The task force will be headed by Chair Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.) and Co-Chair Ted Lieu (D-Calif.). According to Speaker Johnson,“The Task Force will seek to produce a comprehensive report that will include guiding principles, forward-looking recommendations and bipartisan policy proposals developed in consultation with committees of jurisdiction.”

Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries asserted, “Congress has a responsibility to facilitate the promising breakthroughs that artificial intelligence can bring to fruition and ensure that everyday Americans benefit from these advancements in an equitable manner.”

Jeffries highlighted that the task force’s bipartisan members possess AI expertise and will represent relevant committees of jurisdiction.

In October 2023, President Biden signed a comprehensive executive order specifically targeting artificial intelligence (AI) and the management of associated risks.
