The number of dead in the fire disaster in Valencia rose to 10 from the previously reported five, Spanish authorities said on Friday.

"We can confirm that after an initial search, the police have identified 10 bodies, 10 fatalities," the representative of the central government in the autonomous community of Valencia, Pilar Bernabé, told journalists.

Four bodies -- that of a married couple and their two children - were recovered overnight, the newspaper "La Vanguardia" reported, citing sources in the ivestigation. The death of a fifth person was then confirmed on Friday.

Valencia's mayor María José Catalá had said in the morning that up to 15 residents of the complex, which had completely burnt out the previous day, were still missing. There were 15 people injured, according to reports.

The fire had broken out the previous day in one of the 143 flats in the modern building. The flames then spread rapidly to the entire complex. Experts cited flammable façade panelling and strong winds as possible causes for the rapid spread of the fire.
