Navalny's body handed over to his mother after she stands firm despite Putin's ultimatum for 'secret' funeral

Alexei Navalny's body has been handed over to his mother after she received an ultimatum demanding a 'secret' funeral.

Vladimir Putin's best known political opponent suddenly died in prison on February 16.

Rumours and claims have circulated that the Russian state were responsible for his mysterious death, but they have denied it.

Navalny's widow Yulia claimed that Russian authorities had hidden his body in an effort to wait "traces of yet another of Putin's novichoks to disappear".

It came as a report alleged that his body was discovered by medical workers with "bruising".

Navalny's mother, Lyudimila Navalnaya had been demanding for days that the authorities hand over her son's body.

However, she was given an ultimatum yesterday that either she agreed for her son to have a 'secret' funeral - not a public one - otherwise he would be buried in the prison.

Navalny's spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, took to social media to share the news.

She said: "Alexei's body was given to his mother. Thank you very much to everyone who demanded this with us."

Yarmysh added that details of his funeral are yet to come, and it was unclear if authorities will "interfere" with how it is carried out.

"We will provide information as it becomes available," she said.

Yulia slammed Putin for this, branding him a "satanist", for not allowing her husband's body to receive a proper funeral.
