'I'm sorry': TalkSPORT pundit claims Mauricio Pochettino made two terrible decisions for Chelsea yesterday

Chelsea lost out to Liverpool yesterday after a dismal extra-time performance allowed Liverpool to walk away with the silverware.

The Blues were effectively playing for penalties before Virgil van Dijk rose highest to head home and give Jurgen Klopp a trophy in his final year in charge.

For Chelsea fans watching on and then listening to the comments from Pochettino after the game, it will have been a frustrating end to what has been a good cup run for the Londoners.

However, former Chelsea defender Scott Minto believes that Pochettino has to shoulder some of the blame and pointed to the subs he made as a key reason behind the result.

Mauricio Pochettino slated for Carabao Cup final subs v Liverpool

Speaking on the All Access podcast for TalkSPORT, former Blues defender Minto admitted that he wasn’t impressed by Pochettino’s decision-making.

“I’m not giving him a free pass no, but I think his substitutions weren’t quite right. I don’t know why he took off Conor Gallagher, who looked like the only guy capable of at least getting into a position to score goals, albeit not having his shooting boots on. And a couple of others, Trevoh Chalobah for Ben Chilwell I’m sorry but unless Chilwell is absolutely knackered, you keep him on that pitch because he gives balance and experience from a mental point of view,” Minto said.

Chelsea wilted when it mattered

The extra-time period was a massive chance for Pochettino and his team to make a mark. Liverpool had a young side out in the end and Chelsea’s senior players couldn’t step up.

The Blues have young players themselves and of course, that has to be taken into account. However, Chelsea should have had enough in the tank to overcome a team full of youngsters.

Ultimately, Liverpool’s will to win and then those senior players like Van Dijk stepping up, got the Reds over the line even with a team of kids.

Chelsea, then, can learn a lot from watching Klopp’s Liverpool.
