Gary Neville noticed something very strange inside the London Stadium during the West Ham vs Brentford clash tonight.
West Ham welcomed Brentford to the London Stadium in the Premier League this evening for a game that we quite simply had to win, and Gary Neville was on co-commentator duty.
The Hammers began the game on fire and were 2-0 up after just six minutes with both goals coming from Jarrod Bowen.
David Moyes would have been absolutely delighted with the execution of his game-plan from his players, and the application they showed.
However, things changed real fast, when our old nemesis Neal Maupay made it 2-1 after 12 minutes.
You could feel the tension in the air all of a sudden…something that Neville alluded to…
Gary Neville noticed something very strange when West Ham were 2-1 up
The well-renowned Sky Sports pundit was audibly surprised about something he noticed inside the London Stadium tonight.
Neville highlighted how tense the atmosphere was when we were 2-1 up inside the first-half, when speaking on Sky Sports (Monday February 26th, 8:14pm):
“It’s crazy football how West Ham are 2-1 in front, yet you feel in the stadium it’s a little bit ooooohh, everyone’s a little bit nervy all of a sudden.”
Then, 12 minutes later, Neville echoed a similar sentiment:
“Strange atmosphere. It’s very quiet, the fans are just waiting to see what will happen.”
He was spot on as well – the atmosphere was incredibly edgy inside our Stratford home. The place was absolutely bouncing inside the first 10 minutes, but that changed very quickly indeed.
The Hammers fans proved tonight that it’s easy to get behind the team when the players begin the game on the front foot.
That’s not quite the case when we’re under the cosh though, and perhaps that needs to change if we are to ever really feel at home at the London Stadium.
