'There is an acceptance': Liverpool open to selling 25-year-old for around £30m this summer - journalist

Journalist James Pearce has suggested that Liverpool accept that they are going to struggle to continue to hold onto Caoimhin Kelleher, as he shared the price the Reds would be looking for for the Republic of Ireland international.

Caoimhin Kelleher was one of the stars of the show on Sunday as Liverpool lifted the Carabao Cup at Wembley. Kelleher started the game by making a brilliant save from Cole Palmer. And he went on to make a couple more big stops as the Reds clinched the trophy thanks to an extra-time goal from Virgil van Dijk.

His performance has put his situation at Anfield back under the microscope. Obviously, he has been behind Alisson Becker in the pecking order over the last few years.

Liverpool may sell Caoimhin Kelleher for £30 million

Alisson is ultimately one of the best goalkeepers in the world. But Kelleher is proving to be an outstanding talent in his own right. And given that he is now 25, there will be a fear that he will push for a move away sooner rather than later.

Speaking to The Athletic Football Podcast, James Pearce suggested that Kelleher’s departure does look to be on the cards – provided that they receive a bid of £30 million.

“I would be surprised if Liverpool are able to keep hold of Kelleher for another season. He would’ve gone last summer, I think, if the right offer had come in. But there was a lot of interest. There was loan offers that Liverpool were never, ever going to agree to because it just made no sense financially,” he said.

“And then, of course, I think there was a £15 million bid from Forest in January that again, was far too late in the window and didn’t come close to meeting their valuation. I think Liverpool view him as probably worth double that. But there is an acceptance you can only keep hold of someone like him so long.”

A bargain for someone

Based on what Kelleher has shown whenever he has been called upon, it would be no surprise if there were some clubs seriously considering making a £30 million bid this summer.

Liverpool know better than most how important a reliable goalkeeper can be. Alisson was unquestionably a game-changing signing for the side. And some teams lower down the table will wonder if Kelleher can have a similar impact.

Certainly, if his Carabao Cup final display is a sign of what is to come, then £30 million would be a bargain for someone.
