Report: Newcastle could target ‘impressive’ 39-year-old manager to replace Eddie Howe in the summer

Newcastle United may be considering replacing Eddie Howe in the summer if results take a huge downward turn in these last few months.

Currently, there is a lot of pressure on Howe from the media, but he still retains the backing of Newcastle’s hierarchy for the time being, though that could change.

Should Newcastle consider an alternative option, a report from TEAMtalk has claimed that they could target Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim to take over the reigns in the summer.

Howe needs to improve results at Newcastle

The 46-year-old is a fan favourite on Tyneside as Newcastle wouldn’t have been in such a strong position heading into this season in the first place if it wasn’t for his success last year.

But things change very quickly in football and an exit in the FA Cup against Blackburn tonight followed up by a defeat to Wolves at the weekend who are directly ahead in the Premier League would raise serious questions.

Suddenly Newcastle would be far away from the European places and out of all the cup competitions without making a semi-final appearance.

While some have suggested Newcastle need a proven winner to take over from Howe like a Jose Mourinho or Thomas Tuchel, they could look for a younger model in Amorim who has only just started his ‘impressive‘ managerial career.

Howe deserves a real chance to prove himself

Howe has actually become a huge victim of his own success after last year’s top four finish and the raise in expectations mixed with a difficult injury crisis has really impacted the 46-year-old’s position.

Unless something drastic changes in the next three months, it does look like Howe will be given a chance to emulate last year’s success in the new campaign with a big summer transfer window coming up.

The club are already working hard to attract some key targets who Howe is desperate for as well as cutting some of the deadwood out of the squad who are still taking up a big portion of the wage budget.

With players like Sandro Tonali and Joelinton returning, if he decides to sign a new contract, then that’s when the pressure will really be on Howe and we’ll see how ruthless Newcastle’s owners can really be.
