German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser sees the arrest of former far-left Red Army Faction (RAF) terrorist Daniela Klette, who was on the lam for more than 20 years, as an important signal to the victims of the group's crimes.

"This successful manhunt is the merit of decades of tireless investigative work. The constitutional state has shown its perseverance and staying power. No one should feel safe in the underground," Faeser was quoted as saying in a statement issued by her ministry on Tuesday.

Klette was arrested in Berlin on Monday evening and is accused of attempted murder and several armed robberies between 1999 and 2016.

The crimes of the RAF, also known as the Baader-Meinhof Group, were "still unparalleled today in terms of the dangers of left-wing extremism and left-wing terrorism in the Federal Republic of Germany," Faeser said.

With the arrest of 65-year-old Klette in Berlin, a further criminal investigation into the offences will be possible, the minister said.
