Rep. James Comer (R-KY) is now floating conspiracy theories about the FBI protecting President Joe Biden — despite the fact that the current FBI director was appointed by former President Donald Trump.

During an interview on Fox Business, Comer was asked about the recent indictment of one-time FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, who allegedly lied about President Joe Biden receiving a multimillion-dollar bribe from Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

Although the indictment included very specific evidence documenting the false nature of Smirnov's claims, Comer nonetheless hinted that some kind of foul play was at work.

"The FBI paid him to be a spy in Russia," he began. "The FBI indicted him because he was communicating with Russia! But that's what they paid him for over 10 years to do!"

In fact, the United States Department of Justice did not indict him for communicating with Russia. Rather, the DOJ alleges that he lied to investigators about the Bidens and that, as an aside, the source of those lies was allegedly individuals with ties to Russian intelligence agencies.

Comer continued to cast doubt upon the FBI's veracity.

"I don't know anything about Smirnov, but the circumstances around his indictment and his re-arrest and the changing of the original indictment by [special prosecutor David] Weiss is very concerning," he said. "Because everything that I've had to do with the FBI has been very suspicious throughout this investigation. The trust level that I have with the FBI is zero."

Like FBI Director Christopher Wray, special counsel Weiss was originally nominated by former President Donald Trump to be a United States Attorney.

Comer then changed tack and falsely claimed that "Smirnov never was a key part" of his impeachment probe into Biden, despite the fact that Comer had touted Smirnov's claims as crucial in the past.
