‘Too expensive’: Manager now admits he wanted to sign Ange Postecoglou favourite last summer

Alfred Schreuder has admitted that Ajax wanted to sign Micky van de Ven before Tottenham Hotspur snapped up the centre-back last summer.

Micky Van de Ven has proven to be an inspired signing for Tottenham so far after making the switch from Wolfsburg.

Spurs paid £43 million%20in%20add%2Dons.) to land the Dutchman and it’s fair to say he’s been worth every penny up until this point.

The centre-back has transformed the way Spurs defend, with Ange Postecoglou’s side often relying on his impressive pace to cover the space left behind their high defensive line.

Van de Ven was a target for Liverpool over the summer but Tottenham swooped to secure Postecoglou’s preferred centre-back target.

And it would seem that Spurs also beat Ajax to signing the defender, with Alfred Schreuder admitting the Eredivisie giants were ultimately priced out of a move.

Schreuder on Ajax’s Van de Ven interest

Schreuder was relieved of his duties at Ajax in January after a poor start to the season. But the Dutchman has been speaking about his spell in Amsterdam and claims his former club were interested in signing Van de Ven.

“Other options were not available to us at the time,” he said. “For example, we were interested in Micky van de Ven, but he turned out to be too expensive.” as quoted by Voetbal Zone.

Van de Ven has quickly established himself as a key man under Postecoglou and his two-month absence following a hamstring injury highlighted just how important he is to this current Spurs side.

He’s adjusted to Premier League football with ease and has formed an excellent understanding with Cristian Romero.

It’s certainly no real surprise to hear that Ajax were keen but thankfully for Spurs, they beat off competition to land the defender.

At 22, Van de Ven’s best years are ahead of him but he’s already proven he can mix it at the very top level for Tottenham.
