Jersey Shore man killed in snowmobile crash in Vermont

A Point Pleasant Beach man was killed last week in a snowmobile crash on a trail in Vermont, authorities said Wednesday.

Matthew Houston Morris, 31, was operating a snowmobile in Winhall, near the Stratton Mountain Ski Resort, when the crash occurred on Feb. 20, according to police.

“The snowmobile left the trail and collided with trees and rocks,” Winhall Police Chief Derrick Tienken told NJ Advance Media.

Morris was taken by helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, where he died a short time later.

According to his obituary, Morris was a leader in the hospitality industry and worked as service director and assistant general manager at the Modern Restaurant in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Authorities said the crash occurred on a trail owned by the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers, which maintains more than 4,700 miles of trails in the state.

Tienken said Morris was alone on the snowmobile at the time. The New Jersey resident was visiting the area with a family member and friends.

Services were planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday in Bay Head with a repast following in Point Pleasant Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Save Barnegat Bay, 117 Haines Rd., Toms River, NJ 08753.
