Everyone's A DJ: Adobe's New AI Tool Transforms Text Into Custom Tunes, Democratizing Music Production

Adobe Research, a division of Adobe Inc. (NASDAQ:ADBE), has announced a new experimental tool, Project Music GenAI Control, that leverages generative AI to revolutionize the creation and editing of custom audio and music.

What Happened: Project Music GenAI Control allows creators to generate music from text prompts and fine-tune the produced audio to their specific requirements, said Adobe.

"Generative AI becomes your co-creator. It helps people craft music for their projects, whether they’re broadcasters, or podcasters, or anyone else who needs audio that’s just the right mood, tone, and length," explained Nicholas Bryan, Senior Research Scientist at Adobe Research.

Adobe's AI tool uses the same generative AI model as Firefly that the company unveiled in March 2023.

It allows users to input text prompts like “powerful rock,” “happy dance,” or “sad jazz” to generate music. The generated music can then be edited in detail within the workflow.

Users can transform the generated audio in various ways, including adjusting the tempo, structure, and repeating patterns of a piece of music; choosing when to increase and decrease the audio's intensity; extending the length of a clip; re-mixing a section; or generating a seamlessly repeatable loop.

Adobe is developing Project Music GenAI Control in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego, and the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University.

Why It Matters: Adobe’s foray into generative AI began with the launch of Firefly, an AI model focused on generating images and text effects. This move was part of Adobe’s broader strategy to integrate generative AI services across its clouds, enhancing precision, power, speed, and ease in content creation and modification workflows.

As highlighted by BMO Capital Markets analyst Keith Bachman in October 2023, the generative AI era presents new growth potential for Adobe across its clouds.

Bachman reiterated an Outperform rating on Adobe, with a price target of $645.00, citing Adobe’s focus on new user adds and up-selling into the Creative Cloud.

Price Action: Adobe shares closed at $549, down by 0.51% in the last 24 hours, versus a 52-week range of $320.97 to $638.25.
