'Disturbing': Teddy Sheringham says Man United should have signed 25-year-old Arsenal player for this season

Declan Rice has been one of the better players in the Premier League this season.

The England international has barely put a foot wrong since joining Arsenal in the summer, and, somehow, he’s gone a long way towards justifying his £105m transfer fee.

This signing for Arsenal was something of a coup. It was the first time in a long time that one of the most-wanted players in the Premier League decided to come to the Emirates, and now, many other sides are kicking themselves for not beating Arsenal to this signing.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Teddy Sheringham has been discussing Rice and he says that Manchester United should’ve been in for the 25-year-old in the summer, claiming that he’s the type of signing United absolutely would’ve landed under Alex Ferguson’s management.

Man United should’ve signed Declan Rice

Sheringham shared his verdict on the midfielder.

“The problem for Man United for me is the leadership qualities. You look at the players who were available in the summer. For me Harry Kane and Declan Rice,” Sheringham said.

“Years ago under Fergie they would have been snapped up. At least they would have been in for those type of players. This summer they weren’t even in for the players and that was the disturbing thing for me. Once you get players like Kane and Rice playing the game professionally week in, week out, leading by example, other players follow. At the moment you have players at Man United who are looking after themselves rather than each other.”

Hindsight is 20/20

It’s easy to say this now, but in the summer, this didn’t look like a signing United needed.

Yes, it’s clear now that United are lacking leadership and legs in the midfield, but coming into the season, Casemiro looked like he would be much more reliable than he has been in the middle of the park, and his decline is something that not many saw coming.

Rice would’ve been a good signing for United, but a new holding midfielder didn’t appear to be the priority heading into this season.
