Iranian Grammy award winner jailed for almost four years

Iranian Grammy Award winner Shervin Hajipour has been sentenced to three years and eight months in prison following his artistic opposition to Iran's crackdown on protesters in 2022.

The 26-year-old singer-songwriter said on his Instagram page on Friday that he had also been banned from travelling abroad for two years.

In addition to the jail time, a court ordered him to produce music about "America's crimes against humanity."

There were initially no comments from the judiciary about the ruling.

Hajipour touched millions of people worldwide with his ballad "Baraye" ("For") during demonstrations triggered in the autumn of 2022 by by the death of Mahsa Amini after she was detained by police.

In the song, the artist gave a voice to thousands of mainly young people who marched against repressive policies in Iran. The protests were the most serious ever in the history of the Islamic Republic and drew harsh reprisals against participants.

Shortly after the song's release, the singer was arrested and later had to apologize under apparent duress by the authorities.

Around a year ago, the song was honoured with a Grammy. In January, Hajipour released a new, critical song for the first time since "Baraye."
