Liverpool have ‘world-class’ manager who Michael Edwards loves as number one Xabi Alonso alternative

The race for Liverpool’s next manager is a story that’s going to dominate the press as we fly towards the summer months in due course.

With Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool in the summer, there’s a big discussion underway among FSG and other key figures over who will replace the German.

As we know, Xabi Alonso is seen as the ideal candidate and he is one of the names being considered, as is Sporting Lisbon’s impressive young manager, Ruben Amorim.

However, according to The Guardian, there is another name on Liverpool’s list now. And that man is current Premier League coach, Roberto de Zerbi.

Liverpool put Roberto De Zerbi on list of Alonso alternatives

According to the report, Italian coach De Zerbi is a top option for Liverpool if move to bring Xabi Alonso in does indeed hit the buffers.

The 44-year-old has been hugely impressive since taking over at Brighton and is regarded as playing a brand of football that most top clubs in Europe would love. Indeed, former Liverpool supremo Michael Edwards is believed to have been a big fan of the Italian.

Lauded by Levi Colwill as a ‘world-class‘ manager, De Zerbi’s next steps in management will certainly be interesting.

Brighton, as they do with their top players, will have a realism about how long they can keep hold of De Zerbi for.

Quite whether he is ready to embrace the Liverpool job and do the business, remains open to debate.

A solid option

While Xabi Alonso remains someone Liverpool fans would probably love to see at Anfield, the name of Roberto De Zerbi is one to keep in mind.

Yes, the step up from Brighton would be a big one and the expectation on him would suddenly rise.

However, De Zerbi has shown he can do the business with the Seagulls and how he’s developed players there and brought them to new levels is something that FSG will like.

With so many young players coming through at Liverpool, being able to harness and work with that talent is going to be a big selling point for the owners.

De Zerbi, then, might just find himself firmly in the race come the summer.
