URGENT: Japan's capital spending rises 16.4% in Oct.-Dec.

Capital spending by Japanese companies increased 16.4% in the October-December quarter from a year earlier, the Finance Ministry said Monday.

Investment by all nonfinancial sectors for purposes such as building factories and adding equipment totaled 14.48 trillion yen ($96 billion).

Pretax profits rose 13.0 percent to 25.28 trillion yen.
