The Nikkei stock index closed above the 40,000 mark Monday for the first time on firm technology stocks.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 198.41 points, or 0.50 percent, from Friday at 40,109.23. It briefly hit a record intraday high of 40,314.64.
