Sean Dyche must consider unleashing 19-year-old academy star against Manchester United - opinion

Everton fell to a 3-1 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday after missing several big chances, including a penalty.

Beto saw his 45th-minute spot-kick saved by Alphonse Areola, who put in a starring display for the visitors on David Moyes’s return to Goodison Park.

The £25m summer signing has endured a dismal debut campaign on Merseyside, having found the net on just two occasions in the Premier League.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also misfiring and hasn’t scored since October, meanwhile, Youssef Chermiti isn’t getting a look in.

So, with The Toffees struggling in front of goal, perhaps Sean Dyche should consider starting a forward from the academy to solve their goalscoring woes.

Dyche has to find a way to combat his side’s profligate nature, so perhaps he should consider starting Everton’s under-21 top scorer Francis Okoronkwo.

The 19-year-old joined the Merseysiders in 2021 from Sunderland for a fee thought to be in the region of £1m.

Since arriving, Okoronkwo has netted 19 goals for the under-18s and under-21s and could be ready to make the step up to the first team.

The 2004-born has operated as a centre-forward for much of the campaign but has also played on both flanks in the EFL trophy.

Okoronkwo’s deal at Goodison Park was set to expire this summer but Everton chiefs managed to tie the highly-rated forward down to a new deal, seeing off several suitors, as per TEAMtalk.

The 19-year-old, who has been a part of the matchday squads previously, is now set to remain on Merseyside until 2026, so after penning a new deal, one would assume he may have been given assurances of a pathway to the senior team.

Sean Dyche could partner Okoronkwo with Beto vs Man United

Admittedly, it would be quite the surprise to see Okoronkwo thrust straight into first-team action at Old Trafford, though, with that said, Dyche should consider partnering him alongside a more experienced striker.

Playing as a lone striker against Manchester United is no easy task, especially for a young player, but patterned in behind a dominant focal point like Beto, it could pose The Red Devils a real threat, and an unexpected one.

Either way, whatever line-up Dyche fields on Saturday, it must be one set up to create, as they can’t afford to invite pressure.

United’s individual brilliance in the form of Alejandro Garnacho or Bruno Fernandes, for instance, will combine to score at some point if Everton sit back for 90 minutes.
