Dune 2 has people saying “movies are back”

A video of a moviegoer dressed up as a Fremen riding on a sandworm around an AMC lobby has gone viral, with many claiming it’s the “return of cinema.” Why? A lot of movie fans feel that Dune 2 has brought back the excitement of going to the movies and stats are backing this claim up.

Dune Part 2 has officially broken multiple box office records on its opening weekend. The sequel has made $81.5 million in the US alone and an additional $97 million around the world, making it $178 million globally. This has made Dune 2 the biggest opening weekend of 2024.

On top of this record, Dune 2 has also broken the first movie’s opening weekend, which made $41 million in the US. The hype has clearly caught on between the first and second film, with many calling Dune 2 the biggest achievement in science fiction film. The visuals, sound design, soundtrack, and world building has stood out to many, earning Dune 2 a nearly perfect score on Rotten Tomato with both audience and critics.

Will there be a Dune 3?

Dune Part 1 and Part 2 are adaptations of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, a science fiction classic focused on various planetary powers fighting to control spice production.

Director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that there is a third and final film in the series. It will be based on Herbert’s second novel, Dune: Messiah. This has been his proposed idea from the beginning but it’s not yet confirmed by Warner Bros.

Dune Part 3 would further explore the negative impact a messiah can have on societies, with the book starting 12 years later with Paul, known as Maud’Dib, now ruling as emperor. He may be worshiped but he also has a lot of issues upon taking this role. The third movie is said to be “much darker” due to this plot and messaging.

“If that’s your jam, then this third movie is going to be awesome,” Dune podcaster Abu Zafar said. “There’s way more political intrigue, there’s way more scheming. There’s way more people stabbing each other in the back. And it goes to some very dark and interesting places.”
