German athletics club LC Rehlingen will kick out runners Sara and Sofia Benfares in the wake of their positive doping tests.

Club chairman Thomas Klein said on Wednesday that they will also exclude a third sister, Selma Benfares.

Klein said the decision came after the runners, who are trained by their father, Samir Benfares, had not complied with a written request to voluntarily leave the club.

Germany's Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has said that Sara Benfares tested positive for the blood booster EPO and the steroid testosterone, and Sofia Benfares for EPO, at out of competition tests last year.

Legal proceedings have also started because doping is a criminal offence in Germany.

Samir Benfares, told a French portal that Sara's positive test was the result of medication she took after a bone cancer diagnosis and that she was ending her career to concentrate on her fight against the illness.

The sisters grew up near Paris but compete for Germany.

Sara Benfares came 12th over 5,000m at the 2022 European championships and was aiming to compete at this year's Paris Olympics. Her younger sister Sofia was third over 3,000m at last year's European junior championships.
