'Quite the opposite': Alan Shearer states what he's noticed about Eddie Howe on the touchline at Newcastle

Alan Shearer has noticed something that Eddie Howe has been doing on the touchline during Newcastle United games.

Howe is renowned for being a level-headed coach who rarely shows great emotion even after a big win or devastating defeat, and for most Newcastle fans they can really appreciate it.

In his latest piece for The Athletic, Shearer claimed that Howe has hardly ever moved from his technical area during games, quite the opposite to someone like Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

Shearer says Howe has been protecting his Newcastle players

While Arteta is running up and down the touchline screaming and shouting at his players, Howe remains a calm figure in Newcastle’s technical area no matter what the score is.

Even after the game in his press conferences Howe never strays too far away from his level-headedness and critical thinking, and never makes bold statements or says too much about refereeing decisions.

In a different way to Arteta, Shearer believes Howe is still protecting his Newcastle players by showing real leadership and soaking up any pressure from the media himself.

So far it looks to have worked really well for the 46-year-old head coach who has come under a lot of pressure this year, yet his players have rarely been given any criticism, so it looks like his tactics have worked.

Newcastle have always been fully behind Howe

Despite suffering a slump in form in December and January, the support for Howe at Newcastle has been unwavering amongst both the supporters, players and the ownership.

The former Bournemouth man has done a brilliant job at galvanising the city and bringing everybody together, even if results aren’t going their way on the pitch they remain a unit.

While a collective togetherness can only get you so far, Howe will be hoping he is allowed to spend some money this summer after being heavily restricted in January when they really needed reinforcements.

Their Champions League hopes look to be out of reach, but Howe still has a lot to work for both in the Premier League and FA Cup.
